Between 1990 and 1993, the units were connected to the Department of Information Technologies with ring-shaped main coaxial cables. DEC server devices were terminated at the end of these, and the units were connected with Dec 423 MMJ cables and connectors, and service was provided with dummy terminals. With the developing technology, the connections were converted to light speed fiber cables over time. In 1990, our unit pulled the fiber cable, which was not available in many places at that time, and offered it to the service of the university. In the following times, all of our cables were taken into service by pulling and terminating them personally by our unit from the existing galleries.
Between 1993-1997, internet connections were started to be provided with leased line lines. Internet was used with text-based tools such as Lynx and gopher. Later, ULAKNET(ULAKBIM) was connected to the internet under the umbrella of ULAKBIM and a NATIONAL network was created through connections between universities. Thus, universities started to communicate quickly and uninterruptedly between each other.
IBM servers were rented in certain periods and server needs were met. Programs were written usingPunch Card and results were obtained. Later, a DEC VAX 6520 machine with a cluster structure was purchased and the VMS (Virtual Managament System) operating system was run on it. Academic studies of both staff and students were enabled. In this environment, operations were performed directly using the editor. Along with these systems, 2 line printers with 2000 lines per minute were purchased and printer needs were met. Within the scope of the project, TEDAŞ electricity bills and telecom bills were processed and printed here. In 1998, DEC Alpha 4100 was purchased and DEC Rally application developer was developed on the VMS operating system and many new applications were developed on the DEC Oracle database to meet the needs of the university. These software have been used for more than 25 years.
Some of these software programs include Student Affairs, Personnel, Staff, Roster, Ration Distribution, Commodity, Budget, Purchasing, Project Tracking, Documents, Electricity, Water Tracking, etc. In previous structures, services were provided as main machine and end-user terminals. In such a structure, only the applications available on the main server could be used. Later, desktop computers with a separate operating system were provided for each user. Thus, each user had the opportunity to install their own applications.
Servers started to serve as medium-sized servers rather than very large structures. WEB, DNS, EMAiL, FTP services with LINUX operating systems, which are UNIX derivatives, were installed and commissioned by our unit and are still working. Staff and students were able to perform web space, e-mail, programming, database, etc. operations with the given area.
A TIER 3 level Data Center room, which is located at certain points in Turkey, was built to provide a good service quality and uninterrupted infrastructure. Features such as cold corridor, ambient monitoring, SMS notification, Novec 1230 gas fire extinguishing, redundant electrical structure, modular UPS, redundant PDU, redundant air conditioning were built by emphasizing features.
By going to every point in the campus, the internet infrastructure of the units was established with 10 GB redundant connections. Both the main campus and the surrounding campuses have been provided with high-capacity internet output with a total capacity of 1500 Mbps. With 950 wireless access points distributed on the campus, academic studies can be carried out at national and international level. The number of instant users is over 10000.
With the opportunities given to users, firewalls started to take place when malicious software and trap structures started to increase with unlicensed software. Today's dizzying technology offers many possibilities, but it requires the end user to use it consciously in order to prevent the end user's own devices and information from being damaged by endless cyber attacks and to prevent infiltration into the corporate system. Using the national operating system PARDUS ,it has become important to prevent the leakage of information and the outflow of resources. Dissemination activities are being carried out in this regard.
